On older carbureted bikes, most "it sat all winter and now it runs rough" problems live here — varnished jets, hardened intake boots that leak vacuum, and petcock screens full of tank rust.

Intake and exhaust changes move together: a freer-flowing filter or pipe leans the mixture, which is what jet kits and fuel controllers correct. Foam filters need oil to filter at all; paper elements are replace-only. Ethanol-blend fuel is hard on old rubber, so reline fuel systems with ethanol-safe hose.
